Ryan Jacob CAE: 7 Ways You Can Help Stop Air Pollution
Air pollution is an invisible killer. The World Health Organization estimates that as many as 3 million deaths every year are the result of exposure to ambient air pollution. The thing about air pollution is that it affects everyone equally, says Ryan Jacob, CAE or clean air engineering student. You aren’t given a choice on whether you should care. If living well and healthy is an important goal for you, then you must take steps to help stop air pollution.
Ryan Jacob CAE shares seven simple things you can do right away that can help make a difference:
1. Use public transportation – Taking your car off the road may seem inconvenient, but doing so also has its financial rewards. The American Public Transportation Authority found that public transportation produces 95% less carbon monoxide and nearly 50% less carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide per passenger mile than a private vehicle does. This is huge, says Ryan Jacob CAE.
2. Buy energy efficient appliances – When it’s time to replace old and broken appliances, choose brands that are energy efficient or display the ENERGY STAR rating. This rating can be found in a wide range of categories, from computers and air conditioners, to lighting and refrigerators.
3. Plant a garden – You don’t have to have a green thumb just to plant and care for a garden, explains Ryan Jacob CAE. There are plants that grow easily and require minimal maintenance. Plants, whether indoors or outdoors, help remove harmful compounds in the air by absorbing these through leaves. If you’re committed to plant a garden, some plants that are known to remove formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide in the air are Bamboo Palm, Rubber Plant, and Areca Palm.
4. Turn off lights when not in use – It goes without saying you should turn off lights when they aren’t in use but you’d be surprised at the number of people who still forget and shockingly don’t understand its impact. Ryan Jacob CAE shares that turning off the lights in our homes for an hour everyday can save more than 5 million kilowatt hours of electricity in the country each year.
5. Reduce, reuse, recycle whenever possible – As much as possible, reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce the energy you consume and reuse and recycle home items like glass jars and containers, newspapers, paper bags, old tires, clothes etc. The 3 R’s help reduce waste and causes less damage to the environment, including contributing to air pollution.
6. Avoid plastic as much as possible – Did you know that plastic takes up to 1000 years to decompose? Ryan Jacob CAE shares that plastic bottles take 450 years to decompose while plastic items such as bags can take as long as a century. With that in mind, this also means to say you can opt for products with minimal plastic packaging.
7. Quit smoking – Finally, quit smoking. Smoking doesn’t just cause air pollution; it also affects your health and those around you. If the health and environmental benefits aren’t enough to convince you, then focus on the monetary savings quitting smoking provides.
